To help shape a key government document so it is easy to understand, we spoke with older South Australians who had direct experience with completing an Advance Care Directive, were interested in completing one or wanted to know more about them.
Advance Care Directives can be completed by any person over the age of 18, and is readily available in the format of a DIY Kit.
The Plug-in, an initiative of COTA SA, partnered with SA Health to understand community experience of Advance Care Directives, a legally recognised document that provides direction about your wishes, preferences and instructions for future health care.
Following extensive consultation and feedback, SA Health had revised the existing Advance Care Directive form and DIY Kit to be easier to read, access and complete. Prior to finalising the revised form and guide, we sought community feedback on the readability of the new form and guide to influence the final product and make it more accessible for the wider community.
We spoke with people 50 years and older from a range of socio-economic backgrounds to understand the usability of the revised form and guide.
The Plug-in hosted a series of focus groups in metropolitan Adelaide to test and explore the revised Advance Care Directive form and guide. Participants received a gift card in appreciation of their time.

The Plug-in was supported by SA Health to undertake this research. The findings from this study helped us understand what works well and what can be improved to make the new Advance Care Directive form and guide easier to understand. Your input has also shed light on what will help meet the needs of people who will be completing an Advance Care Directive in the future.
]Through your contribution you are raising the voices of older people and supporting the important work of COTA SA!
